Contents of the PCLaw.cfg File

The PCLaw configuration file contains the destination paths that points your workstation to your firm's set of books. The PCLaw software store the configuration file in the default location C:\Program Files\LexisNexis\PCLaw\LocalData folder. Prior to version 8 the software stored the information in the Windows System Registry.


Major Components of the PCLaw.cfg File

These are the major components to the PCLaw.cfg file:

  • BookPathServer- Location of your PCLaw Common folder
  • BookPathData- Location of your PCLaw Data folder
  • Serial- Your PCLaw Serial Number
  • BookFirmName- Your Firm Name
  • OnlineStatus- Enables or disables your firm's set of books. For example if you change the OnlineStatus to 0 then your books are disabled and you cannot log into them. If you change the OnlineStatus to 1, then your books are active.

How to Open the PCLaw.cfg File

Take the following steps to open the PCLaw.cfg file:

  1. Click the Start button on the Windows® Taskbar to open the Start Menu.
  2. Select My Computer to open the My Computer Window.
    Note: Select Computer if you are using Microsoft® Vista/Windows 7 to open the Computer window.
  3. Double-click Local Disk C: to view a Directory Listing of folders stored on your C: hard drive.
  4. Double-click Program Files, then LexisNexis, then PCLaw, and then LocalData to open the LocalData folder.
  5. Right-click PCLaw.cfg and select Open With to open the Windows window.
  6. Click to check the Select the program from a list box to open the Open With window.
  7. Click to select Notepad from the Programs List.
  8. Click OK to open the PCLaw.cfg file.

How to Edit the PCLaw.cfg File

Take the following steps to edit the PCLaw.cfg file:

  1. Click File and select Save As to create a backup of your PCLaw.cfg file and to open the Save As window.
  2. Enter PCLawBak.old in the File Name field.
  3. Click to select All Files from the Save as type drop-down list.
  4. Click Save to create a backup of your PCLaw.cfg file.
  5. Enter your changes.
  6. Click File and select Save As to open the Save As window.
  7. Enter PCLaw.cfg in the File Name field.
  8. Click to select All Files from the Save as type drop-down list.
  9. Click Save to save your changes and to open the Confirm Overwrite prompt.
  10. Click Yes.
  11. Click the X button to close.
