Finding References to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP)

The following searches illustrate how to find case law documents that refer to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP).

These sample searches illustrate effective techniques for finding cases that contain the most common FRCP formats. Because courts use many different cite formats, these search formats may not retrieve all rules.

Use a free-text search with the abbreviation frcp to find case law documents that refer to a rule that does not have a subsection.

For example, use the following search to find cases from any of the New York U.S. District Courts dated 2007 or later that refer to FRCP 56:

Folder:

Federal Legal - U.S. / District Court Cases - By State (only for products with source selection folders)

Source:

NY Federal District Courts (MEGA;NYDIST)

Search:

frcp 56 and date aft 2006

NOTE:

The DATE segment is arithmetically searchable.

Use a free-text search to find case law documents that refer to a rule that has a subsection and include the following alternatives to FRCP:

  • frcp
  • f.r.c.p.
  • fed.r.civ!
  • frcvp
  • f.r.civ!
  • ( civ** w/3 r or rul* )
This search format must be enclosed in parentheses.

Use a W/10 connector to join your term or phrase with the frcp abbreviation. Use an OR connector between the alternatives. Use the exclamation mark ( ! ) to find all forms of the words. Use an asterisk ( * ) to replace a letter or number in a search term.

Use the W/3 connector to include subsection letters. For example, use the following search to find cases from any of the New York U.S. District Courts dated 2007 or later that refer to FRCP 56 (b):

Folder:

Federal Legal - U.S. / District Court Cases - By State (only for products with source selection folders)

Search:
